MENEZES,P.H.S.; ALBUQUERQUE,J.A.A.; SMIDERLE,J.O.; MEDEIROS,R.D.; ALVES,J.M.A.; GIANLUPPI,D..
ABSTRACT: Weeds from soils submitted to different tillage managements were identified in two consecutive years of soybean cultivation in the Cerrado of Roraima. The study was carried out in three areas: native area (NA), mechanically mowed native area (MA), and limed area (LA). A descriptive analysis of the phytosociological parameters relative density (Drr), relative frequency (Frr), relative dominance (Dor), importance value index (IVI), and index of relative importance (IRI) was performed to interpret the results. The weed similarity index (SI) was also calculated in the assessed areas. The highest relative frequencies were observed for Trachypogon plumosus (40.92%), Bulbostylis capillaris (18.52%), and Spermacoce capitata (18.33%) in the native area...

Lognormal abundance distribution of woody species in a cerrado fragment (São Carlos, southeastern Brazil) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Oliveira,Fabiola Ferreira; Batalha,Marco Antônio.
The lognormal distribution model is frequently found in communities, especially those which are rich in species and influenced by many environmental factors, as those of the cerrado. We tested the hypothesis that the abundance distribution of woody plant species in a cerrado fragment fits the lognormal model. We placed 20 lines in a cerrado fragment and sampled, with the point-quarter method, 800 individuals with stem perimeter equal or larger than 3 cm. We plotted the abundance-class histogram of the species, verified its normality with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and estimated the expected number of woody species for this community. Of the 63 obtained species, Anadenanthera falcata (with 185 species), Eriotheca gracilipes (43), Stryphnodendron obovatum...

Floristic composition, diversity and structure of the "cerrado" sensu stricto on rocky soils in northern Goiás and southern Tocantins, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Felfili,Jeanine Maria; Fagg,Christopher William.
The "cerrado" sensu stricto is a savanna woodland physiognomy which occupies most of central Brazil, with the degree of canopy cover varying from 10% to 60% at a site with trees reaching up to seven meters high. It occurs mostly on deep and well-drained soils but can also be found on shallower ones. The diversity and structure of the "cerrado" sensu stricto on shallow and rocky Cambisols and Litosols were studied here. Sixteen 20 x 50 m² plots were sampled in a random design over patches of this vegetation in northern Goiás State and southern Tocantins. All stems from 5 cm diameter at 30 cm from the ground level were measured. Vouchers were collected and deposited at the IBGE herbarium. A total of 87 species in 65 genera and 33 families were found....

Record of postmortem injuries caused by the Neotropical social wasp Agelaia fulvofasciata (Degeer) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) on pig carcasses in the Eastern Amazon region: implications in forensic taphonomy Rev. Bras. entomol.
Barbosa,Rodrigo R.; Carriço,Cesar; Souto,Raimundo N. P.; Andena,Sergio R.; Ururahy-Rodrigues,Alexandre; Queiroz,Margareth M. C..
ABSTRACTPostmortem injuries are a source of misinterpretations in forensic analysis and therefore are subject matter of taphonomic interest. Many types of injuries can cause different artifacts, which deserve attention of the forensic pathologists when evaluating corpses, either at the crime scene or during an autopsy. Insects can be important biotaphonomic agents and their activity may result in artifacts that resemble antemortem injuries. Here, we describe postmortem injuries caused by the Neotropical wasp Agelaia fulvofasciata (Degeer, 1773) on domestic pig carcasses weighting 15 kg. The specimens showed extensive injuries to the lower lip, similar to lacerations, and some minor lesions on the snout and anus. In addition, we observed the same wasp...

Sarchophagid flies (Insecta, Diptera) from pig carcasses in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with nine new records from the Cerrado, a threatened Neotropical biome Rev. Bras. entomol.
Mello-Patiu,Cátia A.; Paseto,Maria Lígia; Faria,Lucas S. de; Mendes,Júlio; Linhares,Arício X..
Sarchophagid flies (Insecta, Diptera) from pig carcasses in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with nine new records from the Cerrado, a threatened Neotropical biome. The diversity of the Sarcophagidae fauna of the Cerrado biome, also know as the Brazilian Savanna, is still underestimated. In this research we collected flies in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during a Forensic Entomology experiment. Samples were collected throughout the decomposition process of domestic pig (Sus scrofa Linnaeus) carcasses, and the experiments were conducted in areas of pasture and semideciduous forest. A total of 85,694 adult flesh flies belonging to 57 species were collected from all carcasses. New records for nine species of Sarcophaginae are provided, including the first record...

Cerrado ground-dwelling ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) as indicators of edge effects Rev. Bras. Zool.
Brandão,Carlos Roberto F.; Silva,Rogério R.; Feitosa,Rodrigo M..
Large-scale agricultural production in Brazil preferentially occupies plateaus reclaimed from areas originally covered by Cerrado (savanna). Depending on the region, a percentage of the pristine vegetation coverage must be preserved by law, resulting in the creation of fragmented legal Cerrado reserves. The geometry of these relatively small legal reserves creates new habitat edges and ecotones, whose effects on the invertebrate fauna are poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the effects of abrupt edges resulting from soy production on ground-dwelling ant assemblages in the Brazilian Cerrado. The study sites are located within the Amazon region, in the state of Maranhão, northern Brazil, but were covered by Cerrado on a relatively low plateau,...

Threats to the Cerrado remnants of the state of São Paulo, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Durigan,Giselda; Siqueira,Marinez Ferreira de; Franco,Geraldo Antonio Daher Correa.
Patches of natural vegetation remaining in landscapes occupied by man are continuously under threat due to the edge effects and also to land use types around these remnants. The most frequent threats and land use types in the vicinity of 81 Cerrado (tropical savanna type) fragments in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed in order to verify if the frequency of every type of disturbance to the natural ecosystem depends on the neighboring land use. The hypothesis of the study assumes that environmental threats are correlated with land use around protected areas. From the 81 areas, the most frequent human-induced land cover types around the Cerrado remnants were: pasture (recorded in 78% of the areas), sugarcane plantations (26%), roads (19%), annual...

ABSTRACT Forest soils are N2O sources and commonly act as CH4 sinks. This study evaluated the dynamics of the CH4 and N2O fluxes of soils under Eucalyptus plantations and native Cerrado vegetation, as well as possible interactions between environmental factors and fluxes. The study was carried out in the Distrito Federal, Brazil, during 26 months, in three areas: in two stands of the hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis, planted in 2011 (E1), and in 2009 (E2) and native Cerrado vegetation (CE). Measurements to determine the fluxes in a closed static chamber were carried out from Oct 2013 to Nov 2015. Soil and climate factors were monitored. During the study period, the mean CH4 fluxes were –22.48, –8.38 and –1.31 μg CH4 m–2 h–1 and the mean N2O...

Can land use changes alter carbon, nitrogen and major ion transport in subtropical brazilian streams? Scientia Agricola
Silva,Daniela Mariano Lopes da; Ometto,Jean Pierre Henry Balbaud; Lobo,Gré de Araújo; Lima,Walter de Paula; Scaranello,Marcos Augusto; Mazzi,Edmar; Rocha,Humberto Ribeiro da.
Several studies in tropical watersheds have evaluated the impact of urbanization and agricultural practices on water quality. In Brazil, savannas (known regionally as Cerrados) represent 23% of the country's surface, representing an important share to the national primary growth product, especially due to intense agriculture. The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive evaluation, on a yearly basis, of carbon, nitrogen and major ion fluxes in streams crossing areas under different land use (natural vegetation, sugar cane and eucalyptus) in a savanna region of SE Brazil. Eucalyptus and sugar cane alter the transport of the investigated elements in small watersheds. The highest concentration of all parameters (abiotic parameters, ions, dissolved...

Treehoppers (Homoptera, Membracidae) in southeastern Brazil: use of host plants Zoologia
Lopes,Benedito C..
A survey on the use of host plants by treehoppers in plants in cerrado (savanna) vegetation at Moji-Guaçu (São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil) was made. Fifty-two species of treehoppers were recorded in association with 40 host plant species from October 1980 to February 1982. The families Araliaceae, Asteraceae, Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae, Myrtaceae and Nyctaginaceae were the most commonly used for oviposition. Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. (Malpighiaceae) had the highest number of associated treehopper species (10 species). The abundance of treehopper individuals was related to the hot and rainy season (from October to February), while during the cold and dry season (from March to September) there was a decrease in the number of these Homoptera. After the...
